What is Public Relations?

The world of Public Relations has changed drastically in the last 10 years. As we become more and more digital the way we do PR will continue to change.

Public Relations is rooted in the business of persuasion. Whether it's trying to convince a group of people to buy your products, ideas or services, it's all about putting information in front of people who might be interested in what you have to offer.

PR Outlets:

Print media: There are two ways to get into print media; pitch a story or follow a story. When you pitch a story, you want to create the story for the editor. Editors love something new or unusual. When you follow a story, you want to add on to a story that has already been written. To give a new spin on an existing idea. This is one of the hardest parts of PR, because you have to form the relationship between your company and the media outlet. This is one of the traditional methods of PR.

Social Media: Many will argue that social media is the best outlet for PR. Social Media allows you to create strong relationships with your followers. The more established your social media is, the easier it is to organically be included in traditional PR outlets.

Blogs: Blog posts often act as a press release but extend beyond just reaching traditional media outlets. They are a great way to build a deeper relationships with your customers and followers.

News: Just like print media, it's all about the story you pitch. They want something new, something unusual. While this can be a time consuming task, the feature often pays for itself ten-fold. This method however, is not guaranteed to help your business which is why we often recommend starting with Social Media and Blog PR pushes then moving into the print media and news pitching and placement.

Just remember to always ask yourself; How will this information be received? What's the story you are trying to tell? Why should I care? Is it interesting? Is it unusual? PR can be tricky, but a solid foundation, new angle and interesting story can help with the success of all PR efforts.
